How to Recognize and Help a Domestic Violence Victim

You can recognize and help a victim of domestic violence.

  • Keep in mind most victims of family violence are embarrassed to talk about it.
  • Potential signs of violence include unexplained bruises, withdrawal, reduced concentration, and unexplained absenteeism from work or school.
  • If someone confides in you that there is abuse, believe him or her.
  • Listen without judging.
  • Tell them they don't have to stay in the abusive relationship because help is available.
  • Call the Aetna Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for confidential advice and resources.
