Education Loans And Financing College

Educational Loans n Financing

College... the very word probably conjures up a mix of emotions for you. With the rising costs of college tuition, paying for education can be a financial challenge for many families. According to the College Board, a nonprofit educational organization that annually publishes college costs, the tuition and fees for the 2007-2008 academic year averaged $23,712 for private 4-year colleges and universities and $6,185 for public. But, considering that studies show that workers with a bachelor's degree earn an average of 62 percent more a year than those with only a high school education, going to college is one of the best investments a person can make.

Fortunately, help with financing a college degree is available in many forms and you can find a plethora of information on the web:

  • The American Bar Association presents information about student loans at SafeBorrowing.com.
  • FinAid! provides information on loans, scholarships, savings plans, military and other types of aid and dozens of cost calculators.
  • Federal Student Aid Application, provides information and eligibility requirements for federal aid.
  • The College Board offers helpful information on paying for college including a step by step Financial Aid EasyPlanner Program and several College Financing Calculators.
  • Free online financial aid and scholarship search
    • The College Board's Scholarship Search database lists scholarships and other types of financial aid programs from 2,300 national, state, public and private sources. The database is updated annually.
    • COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS.ORG lists a broad array of funding opportunities.
    • FastWeb claims to be the largest and most comprehensive source of FREE scholarship information on the web.
    • Peterson's Scholarship Central is a robust database of scholarship information offered by Peterson's, A Nelnet Company.
